Climate research & applications

Jennifer Nakamura

Research Scientist
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University

I study climate variability and extremes, with applications to tropical cyclones, marine heatwaves, and wildfire, alongside water availability and river navigation.

Latest preprint

Connecting river forecasts with navigation-disruption risk and illustrative insurance applications.

Developing Phase 2

I am seeking funding and industry partners, with particular interest in transport operators, brokers, insurers, and reinsurers.

AI FOR ENVIRONMENTAL FORECASTING

AI foundation models

My water-resources research has used Chronos-2, a time-series foundation model, to evaluate streamflow forecasts and their applications to Mississippi River navigation risk.

I am also developing proposals that use the atmospheric chemistry version of Microsoft Aurora to model smoke transport.

OCEAN TEMPERATURE EXTREMES

Marine heatwaves

Co-PI working with Mingfang Ting on the drivers and persistence of marine heatwaves. The collaboration combines observations, climate-model experiments, and machine learning to investigate extreme ocean warming.
