Earth Surface and Atmospheric Imagery from MOS-1-MESSR

BRIEF

MOS-1 was launched on February 19, 1987 carrying the MESSR (Multi-spectrum Electronic Scanning Radiometer), VTIR (Visible and Thermal Infrared Radiometer) and MSR (Microwave Scanning Radiometer). MOS-1 is Japan's first earth observation satellite. A later satellite (MOS-1b) carries the same sensors.

The MESSR is a radiometer intended to collect various types of information on earth surfaces by observing light reflected or emitted from ground surfaces in a total of four wavelength bands in the visible and near infrared regions. These wavelength bands are similar to those possessed by the field-proven MSS(Multispectral Scanner) on board the LANDSAT developed by the United States.

MOS-1/1b data have been received not only at NASDA/EOC but also at foreign or overseas ground station such as ESA, CCRS(Canada), CSIRO (Australia), Thailand and the antarctic station (Showa station).
