COHMAP North American Pollen Database, Paleoclimate Data; NGDC

BRIEF

The COHMAP North American Pollen Database is available by FTP from World Data Center-A for Paleoclimatology at NGDC in Boulder, Colorado USA. It covers pollen data that validates the COHMAP model from the present time back to 18,000 years before the present. See below for FTP access instructions. This directory contains files of the COHMAP North American Pollen Database. The database is being compiled by Eric Grimm and John Keltner at the Illinois State Museum, with data originally assembled for the COHMAP project by Thompson Webb III. The files contain counts and percentages of either the 15 or 50 most abundant taxa at each site, including surface (modern) samples. Documentation of the scope and methods of the database is in the file pollen.doc. The database available at NGDC currently includes ASCII summary tables of the pollen database and Paradox database files. The database contains counts and percentages from approximately 300 sites, totaling approximately 8 megabytes in ASCII format. Data from both fossil and modern samples counts are included. The Paradox database files, as well as the ASCII tables, have been compressed using the DOS compression utility PKZIP. Users can obtain whichever version of the database is more convenient.

The available PKZIPPED files and ASCII equivalents include: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- FOS_P15.zip Percentages of top 15 taxa (ASCII files named *.P15)

FOS_T50.zip Counts of top 50 taxa (ASCII files named *.T50)

MOD_ALL.zip Counts of top 50 taxa for modern samples, one file (ASCII file named modern.m50)

MOD_BYST.zip Counts of top 50 taxa for modern samples, arranged by state (Modern samples ASCII files are designated *.M50)

NAPD_TBL.zip Paradox Database Format files

Pollen.Doc Documentation file, North American Pollen Database -----------------------------------------------------------------------

To obtain these files, FTP ngdc1.ngdc.noaa.gov login anonymous Password: < enter your email address at this prompt cd paleo cd pollen mget *.* < to retrieve all the data (to retieve single files, use "dir" or "ls" to view directory list of data files and use "get filename" to bring each file back to your home computer)
