TOGA-TAO Atlas Mooring Thermistor Chain Array Data
BRIEF
Begun by NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory in 1984, ATLAS is an
inexpensive mooring system whose data are telemetered to shore via the ARGOS
system on NOAA Polar-Orbiting satellites. These 17 files consist of ATLAS
(Autonomous Temperature Line Acquisition System) mooring thermister chain array
wind, air temperature, sea surface, and subsurface temperature data for 1989.
This system is part of the Tropical Ocean-Global Atmosphere (TOGA) program,
with the Tropical Atmosphere Ocean (TAO) Array being one element of this
system. ATLAS measures the following 14 variables: the u and v component of the
wind; air temperature; sea surface temperature; and the water temperature at
depths of 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 180, 300, and 500 meters. Each file
contains data for a single mooring location for up to a year. Generally, the
file consists of daily average data, but for days that have no data, values are
omitted from the listings. These files are recorded on a 9-track, 1600 BPI
magnetic tape in ASCII format.
