There are currently four different ways of accessing the 'Data Zoo': an X-windows browser, anonymous ftp, dial-in and telnet. The last two ways connect to a front end to the data zoo named 'Prospero' which runs entirely in text mode.
X-Windows Browser: GB is the nickname of the Lamont-Dougherty Geographical Database Browser. This is an X-Windows based application that can be compiled on most UNIX based systems. It is the front end to a large distributed database that contains mostly geophysical and now oceanographic data at institutions around the world. First, obtain the source code for GB either from Bill Menke at Columbia (menke@lamont.ldgo.columbia.edu) or Dan Larsen at Scripps (dlarsen@ucsd.edu). The source code is also available via anonymous ftp from lamont.ldgo.columbia.edu. Compile GB on your machine, run GB, and connect to the view server running on ariel.ucsd.edu.
Anonymous ftp: From your machine on the Internet, type 'ftp ariel.ucsd.edu' or 'ftp 128.54.19.61.' You will now be connected to Ariel's ftp server. Use 'anonymous' as your login name, and your e-mail address as your password. Once logged in, your current working directory becomes the zoo directory. You can download any files of interest.
Dial-in: UCSD provides a bank of terminal servers from which one can connect to Ariel, the CCS computer housing the Zoo and browsing tools. For dial-in, set modem to 8-N-1 (8 bits, no parity, 1 stop bit). Dial into UCSD at either (619)558-7080 or (619)534-6908; both support 1200, 2400 and 9600bps. Once connected to the UCSD annex, type 'telnet ariel' at the prompt (eg, annex>telnet ariel). You will now be connected to Ariel. The login name is 'prospero'. This is the name of the guest account which only allows browsing. For more on using Prospero, see the data system description 'Prospero', described more fully in the supplementary information at the end of this directory entry.
Telnet: From your machine, type 'telnet ariel.ucsd.edu', or if you do not have a Domain Name Server, type 'telnet 128.54.19.61'. You will now be connected to Ariel (see dial-in instructions). The login name is 'prospero'.
