North American/Northern Hemisphere Constant Pressure Charts and Summary of

Constant Pressure Data (WBAN-33)

BRIEF

Analyzed heights (decameters) for each constant pressure chart are drawn as solid lines at 60-meter intervals. Isotachs at 20-knot intervals are drawn as dashed lines. High and Low pressure centers, troughs, ridges, and jet streams are depicted. Station observational data with wind-barbs are plotted. These analyzed constant pressure charts are prepared by the National Weather Service (NWS), National Meteorological Center as part of their routine analyses and forecasting procedures. They are then sent to the NCDC to be placed on 35-millimeter microfilm. The twice daily analyzed constant pressure charts are as follows:

1) January 1946-December 1949: 0400 and 1600 GMT for 1000-, 850-, 700-, 500-, 300-, and 200-mb 2) January 1950-May 1957: 0300 and 1500 GMT for 1000-, 850-, 700-, 500-, 300-, 200-, and 150-mb 3) June 1957-December 1966: 0000 and 1200 GMT for 850-, 700-, 500-, 300-, 200-, and 150-mb. For 1200 GMT only, 100-mb 4) January 1967 to the present: 0000 and 1200 GMT for 850-, 700-, 500-, 300-, and 200-mb, and 1200 GMT only for 100-, 50-, 30-, and 10-mb. Analyses for the 4-, and 1-mb are occasionally included for 1200 GMT.

The constant pressure levels that have been summarized monthly (WBAN-33) since January 1961 are: surface, 1000-, 950-, 900-, etc., 200-, 175-, 150-, 125-, 100-, 80-, 70-, 60-, 50-, 40-, 30-, 25-, 20-, 15-, 10-, 7-, 5-, 4-, 3-, and 2-mb. The major parameters computed and presented twice daily for each constant pressure level are height, temperature, relative humidity, and wind direction and speed. Computed constant pressure data are for 0000 and 1200 GMT from January 1955 through the present. Prior to 1957, the hours summarized were 0300 and 1500 GMT. The primary source of upper air data used to prepare these summaries is NCDC U.S. UPPER AIR (TD-6201) file.
