NCDC Global U.S. Upper Air, NCDC GTS Upper Air, NCDC GTS AFGWC Upper Air and

Upper Air Monthly Statistics (WARMFLUX)

BRIEF

The major parameters in the TD-6201 (non-global) file are observation time, number of levels level quality indicator, elapsed time since release, pressure of level, geopotential height of level, temperature of level, relative humidity of level, and wind direction and speed of level. The pressure levels included fall into 3 categories: 1) Mandatory levels--levels required by the WMO for transmission in parts A and C of a coded RAWIND report, 2) Standard levels--levels used for internal processing by the NCDC, but not generally reported in a coded message, and 3) Significant levels--levels required to adequately describe a sounding, as transmitted in parts B and D of a coded message. These observations are supplied by the National Weather Service (NWS), U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, and South American cooperative stations.

The TD-6202 file (September 1963 through December 1970), and the TD-6203 file (July 1971 through December 1978) also contain the same parameters, but is global. These data were collected from the National Meteorological Center with missing data filled from the U.S. Air Force Global Weather Center digital files. Southern Hemisphere stations are usually not available until July 1966.

The TD-9711 data file is a by-product of the TD-6201 file containing upper air statistics computed monthly for each standard pressure level for approximately 117 upper air stations. Thirty seven levels, from the surface to 2-mb, are possible for each station.

Quality Statement:

The TD-6201 data are currently processed through a combined computer/manual
edit, relying primarily on computer editing procedures. The TD-6202 and 6203
files are subject to varying degrees of quality control by the receiving
agency. NCDC accepts these data as correct during reformatting (binary to
ASCII) procedures, therefore the user must be prepared to perform his own
quality checks on these data. data.
