The detailed summaries contain up to 40 separate tables with 1 to 108 subtables. The data are accessible by geographically panning and zooming to a given area on a global display or by directly selecting a station from one of seven identifiers, such as name, WMO#, or country. The data includes surface air temperature, humidity, winds, and precipitation. Five basic types of summaries are contained on the ISMCS:
1. U.S. Navy Personal Computer Version of Summary of Meteorological Observations Surface (PC-SMOS) 2. NOAA PC-SMOS 3. U.S. Navy Foreign PC-SMOS 4. U.S. Air Force ETAC Personal Computer Version of Surface Observation Climatic Summary (PC-SOCS) 5. U.S. Navy World Wide Airfield Summaries (WWAS)
Daily data include mean, maximum, and minimum temperature, degree days, precipitation, snowfall depth and extreme amounts. There are hourly observations of dry-bulb temperature, dew point, relative humidity, wet-bulb temperature, sea-level, station, and altimeter pressure, thunderstorms, wind direction, wind speed, peak gusts, sky cover, visibility, and cloud ceiling. Monthly parameters in this dataset are precipitation totals and extremes, snowfall totals and depth, extreme snowfall amounts, and maximum and minimum temperatures, as well as the frequency of thunderstorms, sky cover, peak winds, crosswinds, snow depth, precipitation, snowfall, and relative humidity.
The operations software is contained on the CD-ROM and is menu driven with on screen directive prompts. Detailed HELP screens describe the system at all levels of the system and serves as the User's Manual. This CD-ROM was produced as a joint effort of the tri-agency Federal Climate Complex, Asheville, NC comprised of the NCDC, the Naval Oceanography Command Detachment-Asheville, and the U.S. Air Force Environmental Technical Applications Center-Asheville. The cost of the CD-ROM is $50.00.
