The initial effort in this multi-year, multi-institutional research program was to obtain high-quality data sets of all the relevant physical variables needed to construct accurate kinematic and dynamic descriptions of the response of shelf water to strong wind forcing in the 2 to 10 day band. A series of the small-scale, densely-instrumented field experiments of approximately four months duration (called CODE-1 and CODE-2) were designed to explore and determine the kinematics, momentum, and heat balances of the local wind-driven flow over a region of the northern California shelf.
The following data acquired during experiment are available at the Data Zoo (see below for more information and access instructions). First, three sets of data are available directly from the subdirectory labeled /CODE:
Moored and drifting current meter data Temperature chains Bottom and mid-water pressure/temperature Meterological stations (wind and air/sea temp)
These data are available elsewhere in the Data Zoo:
Sea-level observations (see /NOS) Meterological data (see /NDBC)
Finally, XBT data taken as part of CODE are not archived in the Data Zoo.
The Data Zoo
The Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, has developed an on-line database of physical oceanographic data organized by experiment, and referred to as the 'Data Zoo.' The animals in this 'zoo' are the individual data sets, one of which is described above. The zoo is funded by the Mineral Management Service, Bureau of Land Management, Department of the Interior.
If you intend to use these data in a published document, you are asked to cite the source. If you plan to use these data in your research please notify CCS of your intentions by contacting the 'zookeeper' at zookeeper@coast.ucsd.edu.
The Data Zoo may be accessed a number of ways. One of the most user-friendly is via the Gopher server titled: Univ of California, San Diego, Center for Coastal Studies. The Network Applications and Information Center (NAIC), for example, runs a gopher out of Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA); telnet to naic.nasa.gov, and log in as 'naic.'
A second method is anonymous ftp: From your machine on the Internet, type 'ftp coast.ucsd.edu' or 'ftp 128.54.21.56.' Use 'anonymous' as your login name, and your e-mail address as your password. Once logged in, your current working directory becomes the zoo directory. You can download any files of interest. The directory here is not as well documented as the Gopher server.
Other access methods are described in the supplementary information at the end of this directory entry.
