EcoNet is a member of a world-wide organization of 'progressive' computer networks -- the Association For Progressive Communications (APC). APC aims to provide a globally interconnected electronic communications network dedicated to a free and balanced flow of information including promotion of sustainable and equitable development. EcoNet is accessible from the Internet via Telnet and FTP. From any machine on the internet you may type 'telnet igc.org' to connect to EcoNet. Login with the username 'new' and follow the on-line signup script. There is an initial charge of $15 for setup and a 150-page user's manual, a monthly fee of $10, and an hourly charge of $3 for connecting from the Internet. You can retrieve copies of conference/newsgroup listings via anonymous ftp from igc.apc.org in pub/IGC-conf-list-*, and you can receive a copy of the ECONET on-line brochure by sending a blank message to econet-info@igc.apc.org.
When subscribing to EcoNet, you also gain access to the information resources of the other IGC Networks. The Institute for Global Communications (IGC), EcoNet's parent organization and mother of PeaceNet, ConflictNet and LaborNet, is located in San Francisco, California, and is a division of the Tides Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.
APC was principal communications services provider to NGOs during the 1993 World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna and the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio.
EcoNet users can send and receive private messages -- including fax and telex -- to and from more than 18,000 international users on the APC networks or to millions on other networks.
EcoNet Rates: After a one-time $15 sign-up fee, the monthly subscription is $10, which includes one free hour of off-peak time (after 6pm and on weekends) and phone support. Domestic connect time is $5 per hour for off-peak and $7 for peak time (M-F 7am-6pm). 800-number access is for Alaska, Hawaii and rural users at $10 per hour. Internet and direct-dial connectivity is billed at $3 per hour. International connect rates vary with each country's public data network. A number of countries have direct SprintNet connections at $21 per hour. Some gateway and storage charges may apply.
