Equatorial Atlantic Oceanographic Data Sets (SEQUAL/FOCAL)

BRIEF

This dataset consists of oceanographic data collected during two coordinated scientific programs: SEQUAL (Seasonal Response of the Equatorial Atlantic) and FOCAL (Programme Francais Ocean et Climat dans l'Atlantique Equatorial.) The primary object of these programs was to describe and model the dominant physical processes responsible for the seasonal redistribution of heat, mass, and salt.

In order to achieve the objective, a field program was designed to provide synoptic observations of the upper 500 m of the equatorial Atlantic Ocean for at least one annual cycle. Instruments were deployed from Febuary 1983 through September 1984. Quarterly hydrographic crusies were made through the region from October 1982 through August 1984. XBT sections were taken January 1980 through December 1985.

The data collected by these programs are available from NODC in the form of seven 1600 bpi CCTs. Tape 1 contains all XBT data for both SEQUAL and FOCAL. Tapes 2-5 contain SEQUAL hydrographic data (i.e., current meter, drifting buoy, CTD, inverted echo sounder, wind stress, etc.) Tapes 6-7 contain FOCAL hydrographic data.
