Clients that work with the Data Library 6 Aug 1999
There are a number of WWW clients that let you use all the features of
the Data Library, and some that do not. I would really appreciate
help in maintaining this list: there are many WWW clients out
there, and I can only try a few of them personally.
I have only included fully graphical clients in this list, because
the graphics are required to make best use of the Data Library. It
is possible, however, to do all the data extractions and
manipulations with a text-based or graphically-flawed client:
just follow the links that are available to you.
- Netscape 3.0
or better is probably your best choice. It is available for
unix, macs, and Windows at
Netscape.
- Mosaic 2.4 works on unix machines.
Mosaic 2.6 and 2.7b1 have problems rendering some of
the tables: 2.7b2 should fix that problem in that it will allow
the partial table implementation to be turned off.
- chimera (for unix) works well,
particularly under linux where it is a relatively small, efficient
program. I had to modify the convert file slightly for cimg (I
use the first alternate formulation that John offered), but I do
not know whether that is universally necessary, or just a problem
with my rather old linux system.
- IBM's Web Explorer beta 0.93 works as well; earlier versions have
some problems.
Other clients with problems
- Spry Mosaic had the same problems as Windows Mosaic (Dec 1994).
