The APRF measures selected atmospheric parameters continuously at various resolutions from the surface up to about 20 km above ground level. The APRF systems include: (1) two high performance clear-air atmospheric vertical profilers (49.25 and 2900 MHz); (2) a suite of three supporting standard atmospheric profilers (404.37 and 924 MHz, and an acoustic sounder (sodar); (3) an array of specialized surface and tower-mounted point and integrated-path instrumentation, and various tehthered and free flight balloon souindings; and (4) an independent optical measurement system.
The APRF data are available via anonymous FTP as follows:
ftp aprf.arl.army.mil login: anonymous password: your email address
cd /pub/profiler/hourly-profiles
The data are in ASCII format, but only the current day is uncompressed. Set ftp to BINARY for data transfers. The file format is:
aprfyyddd.asc where yy=last two digits of the year, ddd=day of year. Data columns are: height (m), speed (m/s), direction (deg), temperature (deg C), relative humidity (%), optical turbulence (cn**2), pressure (mb), data source.
Graphical displays of the data may be found in subdirectory pub/profiler/hourly-profiles/images, in tiff format. Use BINARY data transfers. Wind, temperature and turbulence files are available.
