GARP Atlantic Tropical Experiment (GATE) Conducted During the Summer Season of
1974
BRIEF
The GARP Atlantic Tropical Experiment (GATE) collected meteorological (surface
and upper air) and oceanographic (surface) data and was the first major
international experiment of the Global Atmospheric Research Program (GARP). It
was conducted over the tropical Atlantic Ocean and adjacent land areas under
the joint auspices of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the
International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). The field operations
extended from June through September 1974, with headquarters located in Dakar,
Senegal. Digital data are listed under four categories: 1) information products
prepared during the experiments; 2) nationally processed and validated data
from ships, buoys, and aircraft; 3) internationally processed and validated
data from land stations, ships, and satellites; and 4) national holdings (raw
data inventories) from land stations, ships, aircraft, and satellites.
