Daily Weather Maps for Europe and North Africa and Daily, Monthly, and Annual

Climate Data for Algeria, Tunisia, Nile Basin and the Mediterranean

BRIEF

The Europe, North Africa, Algeria, and Tunisia data reside in 73 books titled 'Bulletin Meteorologique De L'Algerie Meteorologie De L'O.N.A.M.' (Oversize Foreign Meteorology Data) and is written in French. The data contained in these books are daily weather maps for Europe and North Africa, and observation tables for locations in Algeria and Tunisia for the period 1877 to 1938. Map and table data are for 7 A.M. The daily weather maps include isobars, isotherms, surface winds, and cloudiness. The tables list the following surface variables: pressure; air temperature; wind direction and speed; state of the sky and sea; maximum and minimum temperature, precipitation for the previous 24 hours; and precipitation totals for the current and previous months. In addition, winds for various altitudes at two observation times are listed in a table, as well as temperature and barometer traces for the previous 24 hours at the University of Algiers. Also, there is an isolated volume of maps for Europe and North Africa and tables of surface and upper air observations for cities in Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, and Libya. This volume is for 1969 only (Meteorologie De L'O.N.A.M.).

The Algiers, Algeria data reside in 1 book, 'Observatoire D'Alger Observations Meteorologiques' (C/fa AO cp), and is written in French. These data are hourly readings for January 1872 in tabular form for Algiers, Algeria at the Observatoire National D'Alger. These tables list the following surface parameters: pressure; air temperature; relative humidity; wind direction and speed; evaporation; haze; dew; and rainfall; state of the sky and sea; ozone; and maximum and minimum temperature.

The Nile Basin and Mediterranean data reside in 2 books; 1) 'Egyptian Government Atlas of Egypt' (Miscellaneous Atlases); and 2) 'Summary of Meteorological Observations in Egypt and Sudan' (C/fb AO-S). These two books contain data from the Survey Department of Egypt. The first set of data is climatological maps of the Nile Basin for the period 1903 to 1928. The surface parameters included in these maps are: January, April, July, and October mean and absolute daily maximum and minimum temperatures; pressure and prevailing winds; and rainfall. Also included are annual rainfall maps and tables of weather types. The second set of data are tables of monthly means of surface pressure, maximum and minimum air temperature, relative humidity, and cloudiness; and monthly totals for precipitation, rain greater than a specified amount, and surface wind frequency. Other parameters include monthly extremes of surface temperature and the maximum 24 hour rainfall for a given month. The only maps are monthly mean isobars at 8 A.M.

The Tunisia data reside in 1 book, 'Releve` Pluviometrique du Service Meteorologique de Tunisie' (C/fa T926r) and is written in French. The data contained in this book are tables of monthly and annual precipitation averages for Tunisian cities. The precipitation parameters include the mean for the period 1901 to 1930 and individual monthly precipitation totals for the period 1928 to 1939.

The Northern Algeria data reside in 1 book, 'Bulletin Mensuel De L'Institut De Meteorologie Et De Physique Du Globe De L'Algerie' (Oversize Foreign Met. Data) and is written in French. The data contained in this book are tables and graphs of daily, monthly and annual climate data for Northern Algeria for each month of 1937. The parameters included in these tables are the following: daily surface observations for the cloudiness, wind direction and speed; monthly mean, mean maximum, and absolute maximum and minimum pressure, air and soil temperature, and humidity; monthly precipitation total; and monthly number of clear, partly cloudy, cloudy, and clear days. There are line graphs displaying a continuous monthly trace of surface pressure, temperature, and humidity. The normals and deviation from the normals are given for all the above variables. There is a chart that shows days of electrical charges during each month, and the pressure, temperature, relative humidity, wind, and sky state for those days. In addition, there is documentation on thunderstorm occurrences during 1937.

These books are part of the foreign meteorology collection held by the NOAA Central Library in Washington, DC. Information in this collection dates back to the 18th century for daily, monthly, seasonal, and annual tabular summaries, and the 19th century for weather maps. These data are the result of foreign exchange agreements, but the collection has not been updated since 1983.
