Meteorological and Oceanographical Data from the First GARP Global Experiment

(FGGE)

BRIEF

The Global Atmospheric Research Program (GARP) was formed to promote an international effort to improve the accuracy of medium range forecasting and to increase the understanding of the physical basis of climate. The First GARP Global Experiment (FGGE) was undertaken to support research investigations aimed at meeting these objectives. The experiment involved the efforts of over 140 countries and employed several major observing systems, including surface stations, ships, buoys, balloons, aircraft, and satellites, for a one year period from December 1, 1978 through November 30, 1979.

The FGGE data are labelled as Level I, II, or III, respectively, for raw data, observations (geophysical parameters), or analyzed data. The Level II and III data are further sublabelled as 'a', 'b', or 'c', depending upon whether they pertain to data collected operationally in near real-time, collected in both real and delayed time to obtain the most complete data set possible, or collected for climate research.

Level II-a data, collected within hours of observation time, were used for operational purposes and Level III-a data are global data sets of analyses containing all information required to initiate the forecast models. The main FGGE Level II-b data set contains all the available data from the experiment's surface-bases, space-based, and special observing systems. The Level II-b sets were used to prepare Level III-b by both the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) and the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL). Level II-c data sets are available for ozone, cloudiness, snow cover and precipitation.

The World Data Center (WDC-A) in Asheville, North Carolina at NCDC has a complete international FGGE data set and serves as the primary source of FGGE data for users throughout the world. Several FGGE data sets are available to researchers through the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). NODC data sets include hydrocasts, conductivity-temperature-depth casts, XBT profiles and current meter mooring time series. NCDS provides access to several FGGE data sets. These include the main Level II-b data, the ECMWF Level III-b analyses, and the reanalyzed ECMWF FGGE III-b data.
