Worldwide Rawinsonde/Radiosonde Time Series Data including GTS Observations,

along with Aircraft and Balloon Data from NCAR

BRIEF

These time series of RAOB data have been assembled from a variety of sources around the world and is archived at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). The NCAR inventory features upper-air data from the U.S., United Kingdom (UK), Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the French Isles, and India, with some station data being up to date. The data is available on magnetic tape, on-line, or on paper.

The data inventory includes U.S., Canada, Carribean, Mexico, Pacific Islands, and Chile since 1946; U.S Air Force at Okinawa, Balboa (Canal Zone), and Clark through 1976; U.S. permanent ships; Australia since 1943; New Zealand since 1955; UK through 1970; French Polynesia through 1970; Africa since 1951; Singapore since 1957; Ascension Island since 1953; France since 1948; India since 1950; and Antarctica since 1956.

As of April 1989, some selected RAOB counts include the U.S. (4.6 million), UK (528,000), Canada (669,000), Australia (337,000), New Zealand (68,000), French Isles (15,000), and India (262,000).

Global Telecommunications System (GTS) data include all surface and upper-air observations ingested by the National Meteorological Center (NMC) globally, and in real time (RAOB, Aircraft, Satellite Soundings, Satellite Winds) since 1962, as well as data from the U.S. Navy since 1972.

Aircraft data include NMC aircraft since 1962; U.S. Air Force global since 1947; Australia since 1971; global aircraft from Sadler (Univ. of Hawaii) since 1960; and GATE (GARP Atlantic Tropical Experiment), Summer 1974. Balloon data include the Southern Hemisphere EOLE (1971-1972) and TWERLE (1975-1976) experiments.
