BRIEF

The data on these tapes were collected by drifting buoys which have reported the data through service Argos and subsequently distributed over the Global Telecommunication System (GTS) in DRIBU Code. All information in the DRIBU Code is included; documentation describing the DRIBU Code is included.

The buoy location and time of observation are given, along with measurements of wind speed and direction, atmospheric pressure and tendency, sea surface and subsurface temperature, and drift speed and direction from last known position.

The Data have been written in a standard subset of GF-3 for drifting buoy data. The version used was approved in August, 1987 by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). For more information on GF-3 subsets, consult:

These data are termed Level A by NODC, indicating that they are in 'originator'
format, rather than standard NODC format, and that they have had no quality
assurance checking at NODC.  The data have, however, been subjected to quality
control procedures by MEDS.  These consist of range checks on certain
parameters.
